    welcome back, cowboys

    Advance Placement Economics:

    Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome to Advance Placement Macroeconomics at Canyon High School. As students enrolled in a very challenging course of study, there are some very important things you will need to know.

Pacing: This semester, we have 17 weeks in which to cover 16 extremely difficult chapters in college-level Macroeconomics. There will be, on average, one test per week. The majority of the students' final grades in the class are weighted by performance on tests and quizzes. Students who do not keep up with reading and note-taking will have a very difficult time passing the class. The rigors of the AP system mandate that there can be no slowing down -- we simply must cover the breadth of material that will be on the AP Exam this spring.

Phones and Technology: Keep them out of sight, out of the classroom. This will be the only official warning. Phones and other electronic devices that are out in plain sight will be taken away for the duration of the class. On some tests, calculators will be allowed -- but ONLY calculators, and NOT phones of any type.

Make-Up Work and Tests: Work that is not handed in on time will lose half credit. If a student is absent on the day an assignment is due, they will not be penalized provided they turn the work in upon their return. If a student is absent on the day of an exam or quiz, they will receive a ZERO on that test until it is made up. Make up tests are given at lunch only, or by special arrangement with the teacher.

Your First Assignment: Students must read pages 4 - 10 (stop at the heading "Society's Economizing Problem"). There will be a quiz on this reading TOMORROW, August 17. In addition, students are required to take reading notes on the entire chapter. The method for doing this will be modeled in class over the first few days. The reading notes will be handed in on the day of the first test, which will cover Chapter 1 (pages 4 - 19). Before the test, students will also take a quiz on the "Terms and Concepts" (page 19).

    US History:

Today, we talked about the general expectations and work for the class. There was no assignment.

Tomorrow, the students will begin a general look at some important underlying ideas in United States History.
